"The benefit of writing is to create a thought-provoking environment in which others can think." Edward Schlossberg, Writer "According to most surveys, humanity's biggest fear is public speaking. The second is death. Does that sound right? That means to the normal everyday person, if you show up at a funeral, you're better off expired than giving the eulogy." John Steinbeck, Writer When you are writing and speaking in public, successful communication begins and ends with the what -- that is, the content. The how will come easier. As writing training and presentation skills training assist you in gaining power (and you will have confidence because you'll be an expert) you'll have no problems writing or speaking in public. To get there, aided by writing skills training, remember the three pillars of effective business communication, whether written or spoken: Writing exercises the mind. Compared to a spontaneous conversation, writing -- whether a presentation at a meeting or a report for the boss or a sales pitch -- presents you the opportunity to show how smart you are. Know your audience and your readers. How much do they know already? Are they specialists? Do they want to be amused or instructed or persuaded? What do you want them to take away from your speech? Edit and rewrite and, when delivering presentation skills training, practice. If you do not review your work carefully before hitting the "send" button, or rehearse the style and delivery of your presentation, you risk looking sloppy and unprofessional. It's called QC (quality control), without which effective communication is almost impossible. Dave, Media Relations Trainer
