Today the swimsuit contest hardly raises an eyebrow. Over the years they have come in for their fair share of criticism but regardless they are now accepted as part of the good old American way. Even if some of us think the whole idea is distasteful, there are many that think quite the opposite. Such as the girls who enter the swimsuit contests. It can't be denied that the swimsuit contest has been responsible for launching many successful careers in the fashion industry. In fact this is often the sole reason that girls enter such contests - to be noticed. National exposure can lead to all sorts of opportunities, and it can be a fast track to a very successful career in such areas as film, television or fashion. Life is such that most of us look very average in a swimsuit. There are however, gorgeous girls that look simply stunning in a revealing bikini. For all of us with the bumps and lumps in the wrong places we can only look on and admire, knowing full well that a swimsuit contest is something that we would never in a million years contemplate entering. Unfortunately a large number of women take this whole 'perfect' body issue far too seriously. In fact for many it can make life a miserable affair with a constant battle to achieve this impossible shape. The swimsuit contest has been responsible for reinforcing the idea that to be truly beautiful one must possess a perfect body. Of course it is true that for most of us we can improve our eating habits as well as our level of activity. Sometimes it takes an event such as viewing a swimsuit contest to galvanize us into action. This is one of the positive outcomes of these contests, and one of the best times is of course just leading into summer, when it is time to get fit and in shape. It can't be denied, that the swimsuit contest has been responsible for raising significant sums of money for worthwhile charities. This can represent the major fund-raiser for many organizations over a twelve month period. The organizers will argue quite successfully, that these women are being judged on their obvious physical fitness, grace and posture. Some of the more famous swimsuit contest events are those held as part of the Miss Universe and Miss America titles. This section although obviously still very important, is not as prominent as it used to be. Public outcry has been responsible for the swimsuit section now only receiving around 15% - 20% of the votes. Interestingly a national survey concluded that well over 80% of the population were in favour of the swimsuit contest remaining. Many believe that the swimsuit contest is nothing more than a gross exploitation of women. Regardless, it has proven that it is definitely going to be around for a long time. Most of us can never hope to achieve the slim long-legged looks of these beauties, no matter what food we eat, or plastic surgeon we visit. Hopefully though, we don't take it too seriously and remember that a person's worth has nothing to do with the outside wrapping.
