How To Choose Between Limit And No-Limit Poker

By: Sam Whittaker

Limit poker mentally challenges you. How much you can raise or bet is dependent on a fixed limit. For each of the betting rounds, where there usually is a minimum and maximum for the different rounds of bets, the bets are either fixed-sized or there is a spread limit.

Bluffing is seldom used in limit poker. The majority of hands are played directly. Making the right decisions consistently over a period of time is imperative, while no-limit relies on applying pressure at the correct time to take the large pots.

When limit poker is being played and the small blinds are in relation to the size of the stacks, not a lot will be achieved apart from ensuring no players can go broke for a while. This will prohibit the level of skill in the game. This type of low limit poker is one of the simplest you can play and only requires a small amount of selective aggression.

In limit poker you are shooting at a target. It is a dysfunctional marriage of a game theorist and a math expert. They live in a home that looks like any other home in the poker neighborhood and, on the outside, they seem like a happy couple. It is more of a science, but no-limit is an art.

A thorough understanding of no-limit poker is recommended, before partaking in the learning the more advanced strategies, which is where limit is different. Limit poker is not necessarily any less of a game because of this, no-limit just has a more varied number of strategies to choose from. As the pots have "no-limit" poker professionals can win large amounts by gambling on all-in. Novices are more likely to take up limit poker as they are more likely not to lose as much as in no-limit

The differences between no-limit and limit poker can be substantial, but the best players in both share distinct attributes. Waiting for the right moment and knowing when to be aggressive are still key.
