Gourmet Cooking: Teach Yourself the Basics

By: Ashley King

To many, learning the art of gourmet cooking might appear to be an impossible dream. But no matter what your present cooking skills are, this simply isn't the reality. There are numerous gourmet cooking techniques that you can practice to enhance your everyday cookery skills.

One path to developing these skills is to sign on for a gourmet cooking class. The downside is that many of these courses can be quite costly, and you might not have the time in your schedule to make it to all the classes.

The question remains then, how does one make gourmet cooking approachable so that you can apply it into your everyday meals?

Fortunately, there are several things that you can do that can help you learn gourmet cooking techniques that you can incorporate into meals that you make every day.

Firstly, you have to approach this in a realistic way. Gourmet cooking doesn't mean expensive, exotic, or rare food. Gourmet cooking really means using some of the freshest ingredients that are of the highest possible quality.

A good way to think about it is to look at everyday spices. Take garlic for example. A gourmet would never use garlic powder or bottled garlic, only freshly crushed or chopped garlic would work. A gourmet would never use dried or bottled oregano, only fresh oregano from the produce section.

Some ingredients in their freshest format will be more expensive than their processed counterparts. But you'll soon recognize that the cost difference isn't unreasonable, and it's still a good deal less expensive than dining at a restaurant. When you get used to gourmet cooking, you'll lose your desire to eat out. You will be capable of making scrumptious meals in your own kitchen. This way, you'll have even more chances to hone your cooking skills.

The easiest way to bring gourmet cooking into your everyday routine is to improve the quality of the ingredients you are working with. After that, you need to learn how to cook those ingredients in the right way.

The first way to learn how to do this is through books. Books are great tools for teaching you the basics and allowing you to work at your own pace. Your local bookstore should have plenty to choose from, so go there and look through a few until you find one you like.

These books should cover all the basics of what knives to use, how to make chicken stock and how to clarify butter. All of these are simple and basic cooking techniques, even though they may seem unapproachable because they are described as being gourmet.

Before long, you'll realize that gourmet cooking is a skill that anyone can learn. All it takes is some time and effort.
